Protest outcome

Korganashvili said he realized that protesting in this form was pointless.

On May 14, 2000, it was announced that the electricity tariff in Georgia would increase to 12 tetri. In protest, Giorgi Korqanshvili, chairman of the movement For Life and former head of Jumber Patiashvili’s 1995 presidential election headquarters, began a hunger strike. In addition to opposing the tariff hike, he also expressed strong criticism of the country’s political situation and demanded the introduction of a state of emergency.

Korqanshvili’s hunger strike lasted 12 days and had a negative effect on his health. He had scheduled a press conference to draw attention to his protest, but due to the lack of media interest, the event collapsed. “I realized that protest, especially in this form, has no meaning. Therefore, I decided to end my hunger strike,” he declared.

On May 27, 2000, Giorgi Korqanshvili’s hunger strike ended without achieving any results.
