After the end of the August 2008 war, a “human chain” rally was held on September 1 under the slogan Stop Russia. According to official estimates, more than one million people gathered in Tbilisi and other cities. Standing side by side, they formed an unbroken chain to demonstrate unity against the Russian occupation.

“People came out into the streets, squares, and along the roads… A living chain was formed to show Georgia’s unity and to tell the world: we are not afraid and we will continue the struggle for peace and freedom. It was the largest and most powerful rally in Georgia’s recent history, held at one of the most difficult and decisive moments for the country,” reported Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

In Tbilisi, people gathered at Freedom Square.

“When our unity sets an example for the rest of the world, we must all say: Georgia will continue the struggle — a peaceful struggle — for its unity,” President Mikheil Saakashvili told the crowd.

“Georgia, Georgia!” the demonstrators chanted.
