providing the population with a sufficient amount of bread.”

On February 7, 1995, residents of Sanzona organized a protest on Guramishvili Avenue. They stated that for three days bread and flour had not been delivered to Bread Store No. 34. According to the newspaper Sakartvelos Respublika, that day one of the citizens in the bread line “lost consciousness from hunger and the endless waiting. He was taken to a hospital.” The protesters reported that bread was being brought from the factory at midnight, and even then in insufficient quantities; electricity supply schedules were also being disrupted. According to the newspaper, “people driven to despair are demanding more attention from the authorities so that helpless children and the elderly do not die of hunger and cold.”
