On May 6, 2010, the government celebrated Police Day. The previous day, on May 5, the organizing group of the “Representative People’s Assembly” held a press conference, claiming that the authorities had deliberately scheduled Police Day to coincide with the religious holiday of St. George’s Day. “The government has a habit of using religious and public holidays for its own manipulative purposes,” said one of the movement’s leaders, Gogi Kavtaradze, explaining their decision to protest.

On May 6, while the official parade was taking place, opposition leaders and their supporters gathered near the Ministry of Internal Affairs and held a protest rally. During clashes between demonstrators and special police forces, several officers and about 20 protesters were injured.
