On October 5, 1994, the movement For Life held a sanctioned rally in the city of Gori called “To Save Life.” The participants adopted an appeal addressed to Georgia’s Head of State, Eduard Shevardnadze, and UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali. Protesters demanded the introduction of a ration card system for essential goods, the establishment of an official poverty line measured in coupons, and the publication in the press of all received credits and humanitarian aid, including responsible officials and details on when and how the aid reached the population.
The appeal to the Head of State concluded with the demand: “Mr. Eduard, we demand the right to life!”
The demonstrators also appealed to Boutros Boutros-Ghali, asking him to intercede with donor countries to suspend humanitarian aid to Georgia until firm guarantees were in place to ensure that the aid would reach the people in need.
